For The Love of Travel

My favorite places, photos and stories

13/10/2026 Adelaide

Caught a train from the port to the city centre and then a tram to the Botanic Gardens. A walk to see the Palm House, an exquisite Victorian glasshouse imported from Bremen in 1875, designed by architect Gustav Runge. It is thought to be the only one of its kind still in existence.

Then a colourful stroll through a number of differently-themed garden sections, loved the yellow grevillea.

The Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition @ the Bicentennial Conservatory, yielded some lovely images. These in particular captured my attention:

Qingrong Yang, shows perfect photographic timing – a ladyfish snatching its prey from right under this little egret’s beak at Yundang Lake, China.

Amit Eshel  from Israel, has a rare encounter with a family of Pallas’ cats on a rocky outcrop in Mongolia’s  Eastern Steppe.

Marina Cano, Spain, stumbled upon a group of cheetahs after they’d caught a dik-dik in the Samburu National Reserve, Kenya.

Gabriella Comi, Italy, witnessed a dramatic stand-off between a lion and a cobra in Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park.

Emmanuel Tardy, France, spotted a brown-throated three-toed sloth in Costa Rica, slowly crossing the road and then clinging tightly to a barbed wire fence post, before eventually making its way to the next available tree.

Bidyut Kalita caught a hard-working potter wasp mid-flight with caterpillar prey for its young in Goalpara, India.

Tinnapat Netcharussaeng, while scuba diving off Koh Losin, a small rocky islet in the Gulf of Thailand, watches as green sea turtle, bites chunks out of a lion’s mane jellyfish.

Alberto Gomez, age 10 (!), observed this stonechat in Sierra’s Grazalema Natural Park, Spain…framing his portrait around a purple milk thistle, he patiently waited for the moment the small bird returned with a caterpillar. Methinks this young one has a photography future!

Walked to Pulteney St to shop for a few short-sleeve tops, getting briefly diverted by a delectable Turkish delight store and purchased 4 pieces each to sample back onboard.

On our way back to the ship, stopped off at the Art Gallery of South Australia for a much-needed afternoon coffee and cake.

Tonight’s crooner, Grant Galea, was described in our day’s itinerary, as an all-round entertainer reminiscent of the great Las Vegas acts from a bygone era –  the ‘One Man Rat Pack’. We both found him quite entertaining but not a ‘must see again’.
