9/9 Skagway

image imageThere is little appreciation of the tremendous suffering and loss of the first people (Tlingit language) that happened as a result of the Klondike gold rush…once a small valley full of trees and natural streams, modern Skagway is a collection of historical facades, gravel landfill, and sizeable docks that stretch out like fingers towards oncoming tourists. This place was once a vital bridge between Coastal and interior groups who relied on routes to trade the riches of the sea for those of the land. The US/Canada border effectively separates families, tribes and traditional relationships due to regulations and a reluctance to recognise cross boundary indigenous rights and relationships.

Nevertheless, went on an incredible journey on Tunnel Mountain on the White Pass railway, constructed as a result of the gold rush and is an engineering miracle! It climbs from sea level to 3,000 feet in 20 miles and features steep grades. It has 110 miles of track.

imageWhales, glaciers and rainforest trails……what a lovely day! Travelling on Auke Lake on Captain Annette’s boat to see humpback whales…and there was a lot, even babies…lots of fluking and breeching!! One even submerged under our boat. They soon head south to Hawaii for the winter, to mate and calve.

Then stellar sea lions appeared around the point….their only larger relatives are the walrus and elephant seal.

Walked along a rainforest trail with an understory dominated by moss, Sitka spruce trees, western hemlock, willow and black cottonwood. And we came upon a glacier….the Mendenhall, the photos show you only 3 miles of the 13 mile length. Awesome!!

7/9 Vancouver to Juneau

The ship holds 1926 passengers, has 5 restaurants, a gym, casino, pools, sports deck, break out areas for different lectures ( eg. photography, masterchef like cooking, lots of marketing of merchandise), dancing comps, card and bingo playing meets, pub trivia ….today I went to:
** the gym @ 6.30 before brekky at 9am that took one and a half hours to serve up; ** “flavours of Zuiderdam”, a chef presenting some recipes from the many restaurants on board;
** “edit your photos like a pro” presentation;
** martini sampling @ 5 pm…ooh, lime/lemon schnapps with cranberry juice and vodka was a hit!!
** a formal dinner (and it’s a revenue opp re photos)….thank god I brought black slacks and a top…..dressed up with some local sparkly jewellery I have purchased.
